Potter of the Month:  April 2018

Chris Patton

Chris Patton, who as ‘foreign potter’ along with Tim Morris has been part of the highly regarded South African studio pottery elite, will be celebrated with this exceptional Potter of the Month exhibition.

Born and bred in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Patton immigrated to South Africa, his wife Janet’s country, in the late seventies and settled in Muldersdrift.  He was part of the group of second-generation South African studio potters who gave further impetus to shaping the art craft which the pioneers Esias Bosch, Bryan Haden and Hyme Rabinowitz popularised in this country.

Patton joined Ceramics Southern Africa and his work was eagerly received.  His oeuvre included bottle figures with sinuous lines, deep bowls with generous interiors and cups, pots and jars that had to contain rather than constrain.  He decorated his work with slip, dip and wax resist, brushwork and handmade traditional glazes.  To Patton pottery had to be a spontaneous process ΄like writing … you don’t concentrate on the manner of the pen stroke, but on what you are saying΄.
