Marinda du Toit

Raar maar waar | Strange but true
An exhibition of sculpture and etchings
22 June 2018 to 11 July 2018

Marinda du Toit is well known for the unique ensemble of sculptured characters she creates utilizing found objects such as wood, plastic, metal and fabric. As an artist, she comments on the complexity of the human condition. Her narrative is emotive, powerful and honest. Subtle witticism and satire can often be found in her work.

With her small solo exhibition, Raar maar waar | Strange but true  in the Black Box at the  Association of Arts Pretoria, she gives voice to those living on the fringes of society.  This exhibit consists of small free standing sculptures as well as sculptures which can be mounted on a wall.  Her theme is projected through the atypical and sometimes outlandish characters she creates: what you see on the outside does not mirror the quintessence or cognitive ability of a character. Or does it?

In tandem with the sculptures twelve framed etchings will also be on exhibit.  These works formed a part of Du Toit’s solo exhibition at the US Woordfees 2018.  For this exhibition she was nominated for a WoordTrofee (Best Visual Exhibition).  The etchings are one-dimensional portraits, created by combining photographs of her own body with found objects.   It becomes a personal inquiry into the manifestation of physical- and mental health (or lack thereof) as the “face” of emotion.
