Potter of the Month:  May 2018

Karen van der Riet

Karen van der Riet’s fascination with clay began in 1976 when she attended classes.  She soon set up her own studio in Shakaskraal, Kwazulu Natal.  She worked in stoneware, in the Leach tradition, and made functional pieces which were fired in a gas kiln.

Karen is now creating objects of great beauty in porcelain.  Forms are classic, simple and glazing is a continuous experiment:  ‘I love the way the glazes combine and flow and react with one another and with the clay.  My wish is for my work to be a reminder, in some small way, of the natural beauty which surrounds us and is part of us.’

The artist is a member of Ceramics SA and has received several regional and national awards.  Her work is included in the Corobrik Collection as well as in various private collections in South Africa, Germany, United States, Israel and China.
