Michael Heyns

1 September 2017 to 20 September 2017

The very first New Signatures (Nuwe Handtekeninge) exhibition was held by the Association of Arts Pretoria in 1967 and the first winner for painting was Michael Heyns, then still a student.

As part of the 50 year celebrations of the New Signatures this year (together with the 70 years of the Association of Arts) now renowned Michael Heyns was invited to exhibit his work at the Association’s gallery in Mackie Street, Nieuw Muckleneuk.

Since this first award Heyns has become known countrywide as a leading Pretoria artist.  He says:    To portray things with conviction, they first need to be part of me.  I need to know them thoroughly.  What I am and what happens to me is important.  And then there are flowers.  This is a resource that always stays fresh to me.’

He describes his own work with the words of John Rocha: “I want to make beautiful things.  Maybe beautiful is not the right word.  Perhaps it's not the kind of beauty that hits you conspicuously, but the kind you come across unknowingly, almost unexpectedly - a beauty that is more than visual charm”.
