Potter of the Month:  October 2017

Ria Scheebouwer

Ria Scheepbouwer was a painter in oils and watercolours for many years until she was introduced to ceramics.

In 1989 she started painting her own designs on ceramics (including dinner services inspired by Picasso, Degas and Matisse), which became very successful and collected internationally. She regards her inspiration as life itself: “be inspired and inspire”.

Ria became a member of Ceramics Southern Africa in 2000 and started to enter exhibitions with her coiled earthenware vessels and sculptures.  One of her sculptures was accepted for the International Exhibition at Artscape, Cape Town in 2001.  In 2013 she won the Glazecor Award for three porcelain vessels.

Over the years I followed many workshops with renowned ceramicists to improve my techniques, mainly in porcelain clay. I try to achieve a thin wall so the work can be translucent.  The work must have enough presence to make it worthwhile taking space in one’s life.
