Danel Gravett & Valeria Talian - OUR THINGS25 August 2017 till 13 September 2017
For Our Things the two Pretoria artists Danel Gravett and Valeria Talian will be exhibiting artworks representing more than their talent: “I focused on using imagery, symbols and metaphors from my personal visual vocabulary,” Danel Gravett says and “I like to think of my artwork as an escape. Somewhere where I can go in my mind or soul that evokes emotions not explored in everyday rituals,” Valeria Talian states.
Well awarded and exhibited ex-Tukkie student Danel Gravett’s works consist of mixed media in which she combines acrylics, charcoal, oil pastels and oil paint. Layering is a fundamental part composing these works and during the process she often covers and marks out certain areas to create a play between the negative and positive spaces of the work with the method called Scrafitto. “These images were influenced by my history, my culture, my education and current environment. I created artworks that reflect the way I think and interpret the world around me.”
Valeria Talian was a child when her family immigrated to South Africa at the time of the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia. She grew up in Pretoria and after school (where art became a passion) lived in England for a while. “When I had my children I longed deeply for creative expression and I started spending all my free time experimenting with different forms of art and mediums ranging from beadwork, mosaics, drawing, painting and encaustic. The subject matter for each body of work for me comes together organically with each layer of wax, each image added, colour and texture, it grows from the depths of my soul.”
