Sirens & Sailors
An exhibition of paintings by Angela Banks, sculptures by Carol Hamman & lithographic etchings by Kobus Rossouw
11 September 2015 to 30 September 2015
Walkabout: Saturday 19 September 2015 at 11h00
Angela Banks, Carol Hamman and Kobus Rossouw are a formidable team. They join their artistic talents in an exhibition, rich in symbolic references and intellectually highly rewarding, which they call “Sirens & Sailors”.
To Angela, what is important, is the sailor in his boat since the boat is a symbolic vessel for a physical and spiritual journey. Such a journey is only successful within favourable conditions. This is why poor Roland, the rhino, is left stranded on dry land, nowhere to go and endangered. Heroic Henrietta, on the other hand, is on a happy voyage with a camera to capture cheerful recollections of the past. In her watercolour works on paper, she shows how dressing up plays an important part in self-discovery and development.
Carol’s sculptures takes a satirical and humorous look at social, cultural and political issues. She uses fairy tales, idioms, nursery rhymes, illustrations and icons in a challenging way to provoke a resonance, whether positive or negative.
Kobus with his finely nuanced lithographic etchings explores human relationships and the manner in which we confront our identity.
The exhibition will be opened on Friday 11 September 2015 at 18h30 for 19h00 by Willem Punt.
