Natural selection
An exhibition of paintings by Kobus Walker
8 November to 27 November 2019

Kobus Walker is a Pretoria based artist.  He completed a Fine Arts Diploma in 1992 at the Pretoria Technikon.   After his studies he worked with fellow artist, friend and mentor Tivan van Dyk for almost 10 years.
Since 2007 he devotes all his time to being an artist.  His work is mostly theme-based.  He takes inspiration from the classical painters and employs these influences and remoulds them into his own indigenous statement within a contemporary context.  Together it creates a dialogue between the viewer and subject matter.
His latest exhibition was inspired by birds and Charles Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection which is the principle by which each slight variation of a trait, if useful, is preserved.  Individuals best adapted to their surroundings are more likely to survive and reproduce.
In this exhibition birds are combined with the everyday objects we inherit as humans.  The way they interact with each other, their surroundings and nature create the narrative and dialogue with the viewer. Together they are preserved visually in a new conceptual context.  The works are all oil paint on board.
