PHOENIX
An exhibition of paintings and ceramics by Willie van Rensburg
Friday 10 November 2017 till 29 November 2017 at 12h00
Â
According to Greek mythology the phoenix is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn as it rises from the ashes of its predecessor. Thus the phoenix has become a reference to symbolise renewal in general and can be used to describe something which has been restored in an alternative guise.
Â
Analogous to this notion of the phoenix, the Pretoria artist, Willie van Rensburg, has taken aspects of his earlier ideas and works which have become ‘seeds’ from which he has propagated for this exhibition. In his work Willie prefers to use acrylic, oils and mixed media. His style is impressionistic in essence, yet bold with the use of vivid colours. It is noticeable in his work that he is strongly influenced by his graphic design background. He favours African inspired themes but also indulges his passion for the naive and naive ethnic style.
Â
Over the years the artist has held many successful solo and group exhibitions countrywide. He has also been commissioned by various major corporate institutions throughout South Africa, and his work can be seen in public and private collections nationally and internationally.
