Carl Jeppe - Glimpses
29 April to 14 May 2022Â
“Life drawing is a challenge in navigating between chaos and control, precision and fluidity; between choosing to be disciplined and embracing abandon.â€
Â
Carl Jeppe is renowned over decades for his life drawings and classes in Pretoria.
Â
“It is a very sad situation in my opinion, that most of the art schools in universities in South Africa, and around the world, are phasing out figure drawing because they regard as being unnecessary. Encouragingly, though, wherever you go in the world, almost as a rebellion, small community life drawing groups are springing up. There are also established drawing academies in many big cities as well, notably New York and St. Petersburg. I don’t often exhibit my figure drawings except for when my drawing group has a group exhibition. This is probably because I consider figure drawing to be a means to an end, rather than an end in itself.â€
Â
The drawings on this exhibition are his latest “attempt to do something special with the nude female figureâ€. Each one was a challenge in terms of composition, structure, line and tone.
