Maria Pienaar

'Briewe aan ma’
20 April to 11 May 2024

Maria Pienaar was born and raised in Winburg.  She obtained a BSc and a Higher Education Diploma.  In 2015 she obtained a BA in Visual Arts through UNISA.  She has exhibited since 2010 when she was a finalist in the SASOL New Signatures Art Competition.  Since then her work has been seen in more than twenty exhibitions all over South Africa and as far as Mauritius and Bulgaria.

Maria says:  “I have countless photos; snapshots as reminders of a life.  With my work I attempt to rediscover photographs of a specific social body, my large and extended family.  However, photographs can die.  This happens when nobody takes the time to look at these captured memories; the people or places depicted are gone or altered beyond recognition.  As with André Bazin, my aim with the re-working, stitching, and altering of some chosen snapshots, is to preserve these images from a second spiritual death.”

These delicate, sensitive creations which the artist regards as letters to her mother are a joy to behold and beg to adorn your walls.
