Augustus of Prima Porta
Idealized Roman propaganda
In this lecture, Prof. Duffey discusses one of the outstanding sculptures of the Roman Empire, namely the Statue of Augustus of Prima Porta. The Augustus of Prima Porta is an example of one of the ways in which the ancient Romans used art for political and propagandistic purposes. This statue is not merely a portrait of the emperor; it reflects Emperor Augustus’s connection with the past, his role as a military victor, his association with the gods, and his role as the bringer of the Pax Romana.
Prof. Duffey not only refers to the origin and history of this sculpture but also explains why it is one of ancient Rome’s great masterpieces.
