Ekkehard & Uta - Mediaeval power and beauty

While most of the sculpture on medieval cathedrals — and a large portion of Gothic art in general — tends to be highly conventional and even generic in its representation of the human form, we find twelve donor figures in the western choir of Naumburg Cathedral that are characterized by lifelike poses, vivid gestures, and very distinctive facial features.

The most important of these donor figures are those of Margrave Ekkehard and his beautiful wife Uta, created between 1243 and 1250 by the Master of Naumburg.

In this lecture, Prof. Duffey not only refers to the origin and history of these sculptures but also explains why they are widely regarded as some of the greatest masterpieces of European Gothic sculpture.
