Alex Duffey:Â Hermes carrrying the infant Dionysus
Hermes carrrying the infant Dionysus - Gods becoming mortals
In this lecture, Prof. Duffey discusses one of the most striking sculptures of Classical Greece, namely Hermes and Dionysus by Praxiteles. Praxiteles anticipated the philosophical shifts that would celebrate personality, emotional depth, and the intertwined aesthetic beauty of form and function by emphasizing the human aspects of divinity in this magnificent artwork. Prof. Duffey not only refers to the origin and history of this sculpture but also explains why it is considered one of Classical Greece's greatest masterpieces.
