Michelangelo’s Moses – creating the impossible out of stone

Michelangelo’s colossal Figure of Moses is an outstanding example of the High Renaissance ideal of divine beauty, which blends a perfect, idealized form with deep human and spiritual emotion.  The statue is one of the great masterpieces of Western art because of its incredible realism, psychological depth, and technical virtuosity.  It is widely praised for its anatomical accuracy—such as the precisely carved muscles in the forearms—and for its capturing of complex emotions like anger, disappointment, and self-control in the Moses figure’s face and posture.  This powerful combination of lifelike detail and emotional depth is what sets it apart from all other artworks of its time.

Prof. Duffey discusses these magnificent artworks in full detail in this lecture.
