Sonatas for violin and continuo from the Kromĕříž Music Collection

Kromĕříž is a small town of about 28,000 inhabitants situated in the Zlín region of the Czech Republic. It is famous for its castle and gardens which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic town centre with the castle complex is well preserved and protected by law as an ‘urban monument reservation’.

The Kromĕříž Collection was created as part of the effort to bolster the authority and status of the Bishopric of Olomouc after the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648), serving as an outward expression of the Bishopric’s power and dignity.

Alongside a significant number of locally active 17th century composers, the collection also features diverse composers from across Europe. This provides insight into how widely repertoire was distributed and casts light on who the most widely known musicians were. The Kromĕříž Music Collection was created between 1664 and 1695, the period during which the Silesian Karl II Lichtenstein-Kastelkorn was the Prince-Bishop of Olomouc in Moravia. The Thirty Years’ War was fuelled primarily by Catholic and Protestant rivalry, often reaching devasting levels of forced conversions, executions and usurpation of political power; leaving Bohemia and Moravia virtually bereft of all cultural life.
